Vintage Siapo 'elei of high quality. Once part of a museum collection. The background shines through clearly and shows the intricately finely carved patterns of the Upeti. Design elements most likely are Fa'a vae tuli, the footprints of the sand piper which can take on many different forms. Excellent strong condition. Dimensions: 1420 mm x 1280 mm. SOLD
This new Siapo has the traditional local design of American Samoa, it is not a common motif anymore. The fue or fly switch represents wisdom, while the To'oto'o or staff represents authority. Both symbols are used by talking chiefs indicating their rank. The Tanoa (ava bowl) represents service to the chief. Dimensions: 390 mm x 370 mm. $40.00 SOLD
Antique Siapo with an unusual design, the main focus is on the alternating flower heads and the bows. This has been made for a specific festive occasion, where someone would have been honored (King or Queen or high ranking official)
at a guess 60-70 years old.
Dimensions: 1500 mm x 1200 mm. $650.00 SOLD
Large new Siapo in excellent condition. Unique Siapo, in excellent condition.
Swimming turtles, these are symbols often associated with good fortune on the islands. The decorations on Siapo are created by a Upeti (wooden carved block) with hand painted detailing.
Seemingly all the same, but on closer inspection all of them have different expressions. Dimensions: 1660 mm x 1105 mm. SOLD
A lovely example of an older Samoan Siapo with ruffled edges.
These are getting hard to come by.
The design combines the sun in the middle part with Pandanus leaves on both sides.
Approx 50 years old.
In very good unused condition, no rips, holes or loose parts.
This has been created with the use of the Upeti, which is clearly visible on the reverse side.
Dimensions are 1310 mm x 980 mm. $450.00
SOLD
Antique Siapo, over 100 years old. Extremely fragile, edges frayed, few small holes. Fine artwork with intricate geometric designs. The triangular shapes and stripes remind me of staircases, while the squares with irregular lines resemble landscape views. I am not sure of the real symbolic meaning of this piece, but it is certainly intriguing. Dimensions: 1950 mm x 1810 mm. SOLD
Antique Siapo,approx 70 years old,possibly older.
Unused, but because of its age there is some wear and tear, the cloth is not so pliable anymore, however no rips, holes or loose parts.
Design on it has been created by placing the cloth over a carved wooden block called an Upeti and rubbing clay dyes over to make the motifs.
On the other side it is then outlined in pigment dyes.
Design is divided into squares that are filled with geometric motifs, with traditional motif based on Pandanus leaves.
Dimensions are 1560 mm x 860 mm. SOLD
Large Samoan Siapo in new condition, geometric star/flower design. The interesting part is when viewing this for a while the patterns unfold to triangles/squares and circles, alternating diagonal and straight lines. A number of Siapo have this wonderful concept. Dimensions: 1780 mm x 930 mm. $295.00 SOLD
Antique, early Siapo, ca 1900-1910, ex museum. This is based on basic naturalistic designs, seed pods and leaves. Although a common pattern at the time, these Siapo are one of the most sought after. This one is in fair condition, the cloth is fragile and quite thin in places, no tears or holes though. Dimensions: 1800 mm x 1320 mm $385.00 SOLD
This is the most dynamic Siapo I have,it seems highly charged!
A very striking & dynamic Siapo. The arrow motifs are traditional, these can be found on the very early designs.Although this has a real ethnic feel to it,it also has contemporary twist to it.
This Siapo is not new,but in excellent unused condition. The dimensions are 1300mm x 1m. $325.00 SOLD
Vintage Samoan Siapo, with original ruffled bark cloth edge.
These Siapos are getting very hard to come by now.
The motifs on this Siapo represent:
Fa'a sigago which is Pandanus Bloom, the Pandanus is a very important tree in Samoa.
Fa'a 'aveau which represents the Starfish.
Fa'a tumoa or Fa'a moa fai which represents the Banana Pod.
Elements and variation of Fa'a 'ali'ao which is the Trochus Shell.
Dimensions are 1220 mm x 1220 mm, $255.00
SOLD
Vintage Siapo with provenance. This was purchased in 1948 and registered as freight from a passenger on an ocean liner. Photographs (from Samoan islanders creating this) and documents included. Rare find to have this accurate documentation relating to a piece. Fair to good condition, fragile areas on folds and few holes. Dimensions: 1480mm x 1455mm. $875.00 SOLD
Antique Siapo. This was bought in an estate sale together with other antique pieces. However, this has had a thin bark cloth backing attached at a later stage as I think the single top layer had become too worn & thin. This is one of the oldest pieces in my collection. However, the design elements & composition provide a wonderfully modernistic twist. This is in fair to good condition, the top layer has irregularities and worn patches, but because of the bark cloth backing this is compensated for. Dimensions: 1150 mm x 1m. $650.00 SOLD
Vintage Siapo, very old piece.Very fragile and worn thin. This is one of the Tapa cloths from my own collection which is not for sale.It is only shown here to show the effect of the use of the Upeti on the reverse side.It is actually outlined with paint on the other side, which is meant to be shown.I however prefer this reverse side with the fine and intricate print outlines.
A fine vintage Siapo runner, dating back to Ca 1930's. Motifs feature Fa'a tuli, the footprints of the sand piper and Fa'a sigago, symbolic for the male Pandanus bloom. There is an influence of the western Art Deco style, in the way these motifs are organized. Collectors piece in very good condition. SOLD
Rare Vintage Siapo.Superb Extra Large treasure, circa 1920 in mint condition.
Dimensions: 142 in long by 88 in. wide In other words almost 12 ft long by a little over 7 & 1/3 ft.
This Siapo was given on a special occasion to a lady whose husband was a pilot in the Pacific,he frequently flew into Samoa. He was later to fly in the Army Air Corp and was shot down in the Pacific in one of the bays off Rangoon.
The extra large size plus the condition it is in make this Siapo quite a rare and collectable piece.
